About this Dataset

Physical Energy Flow Accounts: Emissions-relevant Use

This database records the emissions-relevant use of physical energy flows related to fuel combustion measured in terajoules. It describes the use of energy from natural inputs, energy products, and energy residuals by the economy and environment. It relates to emissions resulting from use of energy products for combustion in production and consumption activities of industries and households. The use of natural energy inputs may be emissions-relevant in certain cases, such as the flaring of natural gas. The use of energy residuals may be emission-relevant in the case of using waste for energy recovery. The table below provides a general overview of the information contained within the use table (SEEA Energy Table 2.1).

| Industries| Households| Changes in inventories| Exports| Environment| Total
---|---|---|---|---|---|---
Energy from natural inputs| Extraction of energy from natural inputs| | | | | Total use of energy from natural inputs
Energy products| Intermediate consumption| Household consumption| Changes in inventories| Exports| | Total use of energy products
Energy residuals| Collection and treatment of residuals| | Accumulation of residuals| Exported residuals| Residual flows direct to environment| Total use of energy residuals

The total use of energy from natural inputs, products, and residuals is equal to the sum of use from domestic industries and households, exports, changes in inventories, and residual flows to the environment.

The International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) is used to delineate activities from industries and households. The data are compiled in line with the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) Central Framework. Data reported by the relevant national statistical authorities are available on an annual basis. Data for European countries are collected by Eurostat.
