Dataset Description

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) publishes the HHS Data Inventory—a comprehensive metadata catalog of public and non-public data assets across the Department—in accordance with the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 (Evidence Act, Pub. L. 115-435). This inventory enhances information discovery, data usability, and government transparency by providing public visibility into data assets from all HHS Divisions. The HHS Data Inventory is available in multiple formats, including machine-readable JSON, Excel (CSV) files, and open APIs for seamless integration and automated retrieval. Versions:

  • 118,403 metadata assets (Version 2.2 CSV, published 03/27/26)
  • 113,242 metadata assets (Version 2.1 CSV, published 02/27/26)
  • 112,628 metadata assets (Version 2.0 CSV, published 12/18/25)
  • 18,641 metadata assets (Version 1.1 CSV, published 9/22/25)
  • 8,431 metadata assets (Version 1.0 CSV, published 07/30/25)

Public use of this metadata and open data assets helps identify gaps, errors, and opportunities for improvement. Your feedback is essential to enhancing metadata quality and the underlying data that matters most to you. HHS is committed to continuous improvement in information quality. Please send suggestions to cdo@hhs.gov.
