Dataset Description

Flow-through measurement data from Finland Syke – TIETO I boat/system (line/profile) Region: Finland – Uusimaa area (Helsinki and Lake Tuusulanjärvi) Abstract TIETO I is designed to observe spatial and temporal variation in water quality and optical properties. This dataset was produced using the TIETO I flow-through measurement system developed by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). The system consists of a mobile platform (“boat”) and a modular measurement setup for ponds, rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. It enables high-resolution monitoring of water quality parameters, greenhouse gases, radiation, and meteorological conditions. TIETO I includes: Weather station (WXT530/536) Radiation sensors (PAR and net radiation) High-precision GNSS and IMU (Trimble BX992) Flow tracking via rhodamine sensor Flow-through water quality system (EXO2, CO₂-Pro CV, Mini-CH₄ or FT, CO₂-Pro FT) Profiling sensors (LI-COR PAR, Keller pressure/temperature) Dual data loggers with real-time transmission Onboard PC for live data visualization Python-based data calibration and quality control tools The system follows protocols outlined in Best Practices for the Collection and Processing of Ship-Based Underway Flow-Through Optical Data (v4.0) (Boss et al., 2019) and includes the recommended MSRC VDB-1 Vortex Debubbler (Seabird, 2023). TIETO I is part of SYKE’s registered scientific equipment infrastructure. Purpose TIETO I is designed to study spatial and temporal variation in water quality, greenhouse gas concentrations and fluxes, evaporation, and radiation. It supports environmental monitoring, research, and modelling efforts, particularly in freshwater and coastal ecosystems. Quality Assurance All measurement phases are carefully documented to ensure traceability and reliability. Calibration procedures, maintenance logs, and correction protocols are applied systematically. Python scripts are used for data cleaning, calibration, and quality control. Use of CH₄ sensor values should be considered carefully due to challenges in applying these sensors in flow-through systems.
