About this Dataset

Jefferson County KY Urban Heat Management Study

Click here to view the Metro Office of Sustainability web site about this study and here to view the complete report.

This data includes a land cover assessment for implementing the various scenarios that impact temperatures across Louisville. These include, by ½ kilometer grid cell, the percentage of deciduous forest, coniferous forest, mixed forest, grass, shrubbery, cropland, pastureland, barren land, impervious residential properties, impervious nonresidential properties, impervious streets, impervious surfaces at airports, other impervious surfaces, wooded wetland, wetland, and water. The data also show the mean average, minimum and maximum temperatures over the 2012 warm season (May – September), the number of deaths attributable to urban heat over the 2012 warm season, and the estimated avoided deaths that would be achieved by implementing the heat management scenarios. This data is available at the district level and not the entire county due to a lack of availabile health data due to small population within those cells. The distribution of grid cells is also included in the dataset, which covers Jefferson County, Kentucky. All data is presented in GIS format. Two sources of information were used to map land surface materials across Louisville. Parcel, roadway and other impervious surface information was provided by the Louisville/Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC). Satellite-measured land use information was obtained from the US Geological Survey (USGS).
