Dataset Description

Few locations exist within the Delta region of northwest Mississippi where continuous measurements of groundwater level are made for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVAA) and the middle Claiborne aquifer (MCA). The Delta is a major agricultural region with intensive row-crop cultivation and aquaculture, which relies on the MRVAA as a water source, whereas the underlying MCA serves as an important source for drinking water, industrial, and domestic uses. This dataset consists of groundwater level data collected at hourly intervals in 25 wells in the vicinity of Shellmound, Mississippi, in Leflore County. Wells monitor the MRVAA (22 wells) and the Sparta Sand of the MCA (3 wells). Data are available from January-October 2020 to April 2024 for 17 wells and from February 2024 to April 2024 for 8 wells. Data can be used to guide aquifer management practices that promote water availability and benefit the American farmer.
