About this Dataset

DSNY Salt Usage

The amount of salt the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) dispenses from salt sites during snow season. DSNY is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from all New York City highways and streets during and post snowstorms. A common way to clear icy roads is to apply a layer of salt, which lowers the freezing temperature of water and melts the ice. Salting roads represents an effective method for preventing weather-related collisions. For more information on DSNY’s snow response, see: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dsny/what-we-do/snow-response.page.
