About this Dataset

Wind Threat Exposure

The dataset provides a global assessment of land, population and built-up area exposure to violent storms and cyclone wind threats. Exposure indicators to wind threats have been prepared by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Please see the working paper for a more complete description of the methods.

The datasets span the period 2000-2024, depending on data availability and are the result of the use of a variety of geospatial data sources, including wind gust data from hourly ERA5 reanalysis data to assess violent storms and GAR2015 cyclone hazard maps to assess exposure to different hurricane intensities. The dataset has a global coverage on a national level; on the sub-national TL2 level (i.e. large subnational regions) results are reported for all OECD countries as well as for Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa. A number of aggregates are included: Euro area, European Union, Advanced economies, Emerging market economies, G7, G20, OECD, OECD Europe, OECD Asia Oceania, OECD Americas and the LAC region.

Data source(s) : GAR2015 cyclone hazard maps, Copernicus Climate Data Store wind gust data (ERA5), Copernicus Climate Change Initiative land cover data and Global Human Settlement Layer population grid data.
