The dataset displays projections of plastic leakage to aquatic environments and plastic leakage to the environment overall, in million tonnes (t) of plastic. This dataset provides projections of plastics leakage at the global level and by region for different scenarios detailed in the Annex of the OECD Global Plastics Outlook: Policy Scenarios to 2060.
Additional information: Plastic leakage estimates from mismanaged waste and litter correspond to the average of the estimates caclulated using the methodology adapted from (Ryberg et al., 2019) and (Cottom, Cook and Velis, 2020) that were applied on OECD ENV-Linkages model outputs. Plastics leakages from all other sources correspond to the estimates calculated using the methodology adapted from (Ryberg et al., 2019). Plastic leakages to aquatic environments and the subcategory trasport to oceans are estimated by applying the methodology adapted from Lebreton and Andrady (2019), on OECD ENV-Linkages model outputs and plastic leakage from mismanaged and litter. The accumulated stock of plastics leakages in oceans corresponds to the net cumulative sum of leakages to oceans from 1951 onwards. The complete methodology can be found in the Annex of the OECD Global Plastics Outlook: Policy Scenarios to 2060.
