About this Dataset

Social Institutions And Gender Index (SIGI) 2023

The Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) is a composite index measuring discriminatory social institutions. The SIGI is produced on a regular basis and data from previous editions can be accessed for the following years: 2019, 2014, 2012 and 2009.

The SIGI 2023 builds on 25 variables measuring discrimination in social institutions that can be accessed in the GID-DB 2023, and which are grouped into four dimensions: discrimination in the family, restricted physical integrity, restricted access to productive and financial resources, and restricted civil liberties. The SIGI 2023 seeks to provide an in-depth and global look at how laws, attitudes and practices create gaps between women and men in terms of opportunities and outcomes.

The SIGI and its dimensions range from 0 to 100, with 0 indicating no discrimination and 100 indicating absolute discrimination against women.

The SIGI 2023 covers 179 countries, but due to data gaps in one or more of the 25 variables used to compute the index, SIGI scores could only be calculated for 140 countries and territories.

Additionally, the SIGI framework can be used to conduct country studies in order to assess gender-based discrimination at the sub-national level. Recent SIGI country studies include Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania.
