This dataset provides subnational statistics on exposure to coastal and river flooding, in TL2 and TL3 regions.
Data definition and source
Exposure to flooding indicators are based on the extent of flood events of different return periods (10 to 100 years). A return period corresponds to the estimated time interval between floods of similar intensity. River flooding indicators are estimated using the River Flood Hazard Maps at European and Global Scales, see the methodology. Coastal flooding indicators are estimated using the Global coastal flood hazard maps (Muis, S. et al., 2016). This dataset provides the extent of coastal floods for different return periods (10 to 100 years) with a 1-kilometre resolution. Built-up area exposure to coastal floods is computed by intersecting this map with Copernius annual land cover data (Copernicus Climate Change Service, Climate Data Store, 2019) and population exposure is computed using the Global Human Settlement Population layer (European Commission, GHSL Data Package 2023).
Definition of regions
Regions are subnational units below national boundaries. OECD countries have two regional levels: large regions (territorial level 2 or TL2) and small regions (territorial level 3 or TL3). The OECD regions are presented in the OECD Territorial grid (pdf) and in the OECD Territorial correspondence table (xlsx).
