This dataset provides an indicator of the availability of green areas in urban centres of Functional Urban Areas (FUAs).
The indicator uses ESA Worldcover data (Zanaga et al., 2021), providing worldwide land cover data for 2020 at a 10 metre resolution. Green areas include trees, shrublands and grasslands. To ensure comparability across FUAs, only urban centres as defined by the degree of urbanisation are considered.
The OECD, in cooperation with the EU, has developed a harmonised definition of functional urban areas (FUAs) to capture the economic and functional reach of cities based on daily commuting patterns (OECD, 2012). FUAs consist of:

The definition identifies 1 285 FUAs and 1 402 cities in all OECD member countries except Costa Rica and three accession countries.
