Dataset Description
Definition
The number of New Mexicans and the percentage of the total population of all ages who are living in poverty, i.e., below the federal poverty level.
Data Source
State-level data are 1-year estimates from U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS), Table S1701.
County-level data are 1-year estimates from Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE).
The U.S. Census recommends using ACS data for state-level poverty estimates and using SAIPE data for county-level poverty rates, when they are available: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/saipe.html
Notes
New Mexico state-level data typically are from the American Community Survey 1-year estimates. As a result of COVID-19 data collection challenges, the 2020 New Mexico state-level data are 5-year estimates and not comparable to other years.
