KIDS COUNT Data Center - Annie E. Casey Foundation

Definition

The number of children ages 5-17 who live below the poverty threshold. The percent is based on the population ages 5-17 for whom poverty status was determined by small area income and poverty estimates (SAIPE).

Data Source

For counties - U. S. Census Bureau and Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) web site.

For cities - 1-year American Community Survey Table B17001.

Notes

For 2005, SAIPE switched from the Community Population Survey to the American Community Survey. Results are not comparable with prior years.

For 2020 city-level data, the U.S. Census Bureau did not release its standard 1-year estimates from the 2020 American Community Survey (ACS) because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on data collection. Therefore, these data are unable to be updated.
