Definition

Children under age 18 who do not live with a parent. Children are considered not living with a parent if the householder does not identify them as a biological, adopted or stepchild or as a child in a subfamily as determined by the Census Bureau. Children are also considered not living with a parent if they are themselves the householder or the spouse/partner of the householder, or a roommate or other nonrelative of the householder. Children living in group quarters are categorized as not living with a parent.
