KIDS COUNT Data Center - Annie E. Casey Foundation

Definition

This indicator reports the number and percentage of children who are foreign-born. According to the U.S. Census, the native population includes individuals born in the United States, Puerto Rico, a U.S. Island Area (such as Guam), or abroad of American (U.S. citizen) parent or parents. The foreign-born population includes anyone who was not a U.S. citizen or a U.S. national at birth and includes respondents who indicated they were a U.S. citizen by naturalization or not a U.S. citizen.

Data Source

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, 2007-2011, 2009-2013, 2011-2015, 2013-2017, 2015-2019, 2016-2020, 2017-2021 and 2018-2022 Table B05009.

Notes

The total number of children is summed for those under age 6 years who are foreign-born and living with two parents or living with one parent as well as for those age 6-17 who are foreign-born and living with two parents or living with one parent. These totals are divided by the total number of children living in families to calculate the percentage of children who are foreign-born.

Counts fewer than or equal to 5 are suppressed, as are percents derived from suppressed counts.
