The data is sourced from the Coin Metrics website, specifically from their data downloads section. For UTXO coins, the daily on-chain transaction volume is calculated as the sum of all transaction outputs in blocks mined on a specific day, excluding known "change" outputs to avoid overestimation. Despite efforts, this measure remains imprecise due to estimation difficulties. For XRP, the transaction volume only includes transfers of XRP tokens. The transaction count figure excludes coinbase and coinstake transactions. The number of active addresses is defined as the number of unique sending and receiving addresses involved in transactions on a given day. For Monero, an upper bound is reported for this metric due to the use of stealth address technology, making the precise value unknowable.
The payment count for UTXO coins is defined as the sum of outputs minus one per transaction, assuming the last output is change. Transactions with only one output are excluded as they are likely self-churn. For smart contract assets like ETH or LSK, the payment count is based on the number of transfer transactions, excluding contract creation, invocation, and destruction transactions. For NEO and GAS, transaction counts reflect the number of transactions with at least one output of the given asset type. Transactions sending both NEO and GAS are counted in both asset transaction totals, and fees are calculated in GAS by summing the fees of all relevant transactions.
Ripple data includes only XRP token transfers of Payment type transactions. Stellar transaction volume covers only Payment and CreateAccount operations transferring XLM tokens, with transaction counts reflecting the number of transactions that include at least one of these operations. Lumens inflation data is currently unavailable. XEM data includes only "Transfer" type transactions. Zcash data for on-chain volume and transaction count reflect only transparent transactions, excluding shielded transactions due to their private nature, resulting in an underestimated transaction volume.
Monero's transaction volume cannot be calculated due to RingCT technology, which conceals transaction amounts. EOS and TRX transaction volume figures include only transfer-type transactions, with the median transaction value derived from the median transfer value. WAVES transaction volume includes transfer and mass transfer transactions, with the median transaction value based on WAVES token transfer values. Price data for all coins is sourced from CoinMarketCap.
On-chain data is collected and aggregated using various tools. For BTC, BCH, LTC, DCR, DASH, ZEC, DOGE, PIVX, XVG, VTC, DGB, BTG, USDT, and MAID, data is collected from blockchains and aggregated by Coin Metrics Python tools. For ETH, ERC20 tokens, ETC, XMR, XEM, ADA, LSK, NEO, and GAS, data is collected using Coin Metrics Haskell tools and aggregated with companion analytics scripts. XRP data is sourced from data.ripple.com and XLM data from history.stellar.org, both collected by Coin Metrics Haskell tools and aggregated similarly.
