Monkeypox Reddit Topics

Overview

An ongoing outbreak of monkeypox, a viral disease, was confirmed in May 2022. The initial cluster of cases was found in the United Kingdom, where the first case was detected on 6 May 2022 in an individual with travel links to Nigeria (where the disease is endemic). The outbreak marked the first time monkeypox has spread widely outside Central and West Africa. From 18 May onwards, cases were reported from an increasing number of countries and regions, predominantly in Europe but also in North and South America, in Asia, in Africa, and in Oceania. On 23 July, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). As of 12 August, there had been a total of 34,448 confirmed cases in over 82 countries, most of them seeing their first monkeypox cases. Source: Wikipedia

About the Dataset

The dataset is a tabular data containing data about Monkeypox taken from reddit. The following are the columns:

• title: Topic title
• score: Topic score
• id: Topic ID
• url: Topic url
• comms_num: Number of comments
• created: Unix Time of the creation of the Topic
• body: The Markdown formatted content for a text submission
• year-month-day: Year, month and day the topic was created
• hour-min-sec: Hour, minute, and second the topic was created

This dataset was gathered using the Reddit API and praw library. The source code was borrowed from the repository by Gabriel Preda. You could check out his works and support him

Inspiration

I'm currently starting to learn about NLP and I'm planning to create an algorithm that could predict whether a certain tweet is about monkey pox or not. Hopefully, I could grasp the concepts quickly and gather an appropriate dataset as my personal project.
