How to use the dataset

This dataset provides information on the number of individuals who have selected a Qualified Health Plan for states that use the HealthCare.gov platform, by county and household income as a percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). You can use this dataset to analyze and compare health plan selections across counties within different states or across states as well.

First, you will need to select which columns from this dataset you would like to view. The columns include County FIPS Code, State Name, County Name, 150% to 200% of FPL, 200-250% of FPL , 250-300% of FPL , 300-400% of FPL , 400+ %ofFPLand Unknown. You can then use this data to explore how many individuals in each county have selected a Qualified Health Plan based on their respective incomes.

You can also use this data set to compare counts between different countries or States. For example, you may want to find out if there are more individuals selecting Qualified Health Plans in California compared to Texas or what counties have higher selection rates than others within the same state offered through Healthcare Marketplace plans.

Finally, since this data set includes count totals for all plan selections regardless of income level and unknown income status - it is also possible to get an estimate for total number enrolled in over an given area regardless race/ethnicity etc.

Research Ideas

  • Using the income data, state and county, companies could identify areas of the country that have a high demand for health plans and tailor their services to those communities.
  • The data can be used to visualize how different income levels are using healthcare resources, determining which states or counties may be in need of additional resources.
  • The dataset can also be used to analyze trends in enrollment by identifying counties or states with higher-than-average numbers of Marketplace plan selections at various income levels, thereby providing insights into where targeted outreach may prove beneficial to increasing enrollment numbers
