Medicare Spending by Claim
Pre-Risk Adjusted Hospital Spending Data
By Health [source]
About this dataset
The Medicare Hospital Spending by Claim Type dataset provides a comprehensive view of the average spending levels for hospitals during their Medicare Spending per Beneficiary (MSPB) episodes. This dataset gives insight into how much money is being spent on different types of care and services, in addition to shedding light on regional disparities in hospital spending across the nation. The pre-risk-adjusted values provide invaluable information to those interested in understanding how hospitals are allocating resources, as well as enabling academic researchers to gain deeper insights into how health care decisions are made. With this data, stakeholders can make informed decisions on how best to allocate resources, better serve vulnerable patient populations, and reduce overall healthcare costs

How to use the dataset
This dataset contains information on average Medicare spending levels during hospitals' Medicare Spending per Beneficiary (MSPB) episodes. The data provides detailed insight into the amount of expenditure associated with different types of claims made by hospitals. By exploring this dataset one can assess which areas are getting more financial investment and whether services are receiving enough funding accordingly.
Using this dataset one can easily explore hospital spending across different dimensions such as state, claim type, and period. To get started, individuals should begin by looking at the overall percent of spending for different states as well as for a particular hospital or period of time in order to gain an understanding about where money is being allocated in terms of claim type or medical service being provided.
From there it is possible to further breakdown the percent of spending from a state or hospitals’ perspective and see what specifics types medical services are driving the most cost efficiency within that state or hospital system respectively. Finally, users can compare these findings against the national average to determine where their state/hospital system compares against other states/hospitals on a national level in terms of quality and resources for healthcare delivery
Research Ideas
- Analyzing the cost-effectiveness of treatments for different illnesses among hospitals operating in a state or nationwide.
- Examining differences in average Medicare payments across different claim types and states, to better understand variations in healthcare pricing.
- Comparing start/end dates to track changes in Medicare spending related to hospital procedures over time
