About this dataset

This dataset gives detailed insights into Irish Finfish Aquaculture Sites and their regulations, as enforced by the Fish Health Unit. It provides geographic positions, species kept, recognised health status, farm type and farm production statistics of all authorised sites in Ireland. The relevant legislation governing fish health was introduced and transposed into Irish Law via the European Communities (Health of Aquaculture Animals) regulations for 2008 & 2010. This is especially important for Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) to ensure that ostreid herpesvirus is not introduced into certain areas of both Ireland & the United Kingdom. As such, this dataset can help us gain a better understanding of the requirements & safeguards put in place to protect our aquatic environment from harmful viruses

How to use the dataset

  • Review the geographic position details: these are the physical locations where EU fisheries regulations are applied. You can use these coordinates to better understand overall patterns of finfish production and regulation across Ireland.
  • Analyze the species kept details: this data will provide insight into what types of fish are found in each location so you can contextualize them within regional ecosystems and regulatory frameworks.
  • Compare recognized health statuses between different sites using this information as it indicates how well regulated each site is from a health standpoint and thus how safe marine life may be in that area as a result of these regulations being applied effectively at those areas with an increased status level score or rank number
4 Implement risk management strategies at lower rated sites (if necessary): if your research finds that some areas have lower status levels than others, you may be able to implement risk management strategies or take other steps appropriate for ensuring greater safety of marine life populations near those areas with low site statuses such as providing additional training opportunities for staff members who work within finfish aquaculture regions or providing intervention services such as monitoring activities which help prevent potential diseases from spreading throughout ecosystems when implemented quickly enough etc .
5 Use farm type & farm production details as comparison factors - also use this information sinc it indexes both types of activities being carried out at each site (e g general farming activity vs more concentrate activity) & related outputs associated with its respective productions which give us further insights about resources available there & economic factors influencing overall aquaculture picture

Research Ideas

  • Rural job creation opportunities: This dataset can be used to identify potential locations for new finfish aquaculture sites with high growth potential and inform the development of public policies aimed at increasing rural job creation.
  • Conservation and Biodiversity protection: Using this dataset, it is possible to assess how much water across Ireland is suitable for fish farming uses in order to promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly form of aquaculture that helps conserve biodiversity.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: This data can be used as part of regional water quality monitoring programs by assessing nutrient levels and chemical residues in water samples taken from different fish health unit registered finfish sites across Ireland
