Swell Wave Height Forecasts (East Atlantic)

East Atlantic Wave Model Swell Wave Height Forecasts

30-day Hindcast and 6-day Forecast

By data.gov.ie [source]

About this dataset

This dataset contains swell wave height data from the East Atlantic SWAN Wave Model, a model which runs daily to generate forecasts of significant wave height (m), mean wave direction (degrees True) and mean wave period (seconds). With this dataset, users are able to access historical and real-time data for waves in Irish waters over the previous 30 days and 6 days into the future. This unparalleled insight into ocean surface conditions can provide valuable information for research purposes as well as comparison with measured variables. Although it's not intended for safety-critical applications, this dataset offers an important glimpse at the pulse of our oceans—the ultimate life source of our planet!

How to use the dataset

This dataset contains swell wave height data from the East Atlantic SWAN Wave Model, covering Irish waters at a resolution of 0.025 degrees. The dataset includes time, latitude, longitude and swell wave height predictions for the past 30 days and 6 days into the future from a chosen datetime. This dataset can be useful for research purposes or to compare measured wave parameters with model forecasts to better understand ocean conditions in this region.

In order to use this dataset effectively, here are some tips:

  • To begin using the dataset, choose a date that you would like to start your query from before selecting one parameter (time, latitude, longitude or swell wave height) and an output file type - download as CSV.
  • Since weather data used for hindcast models is more reliable than weather data used for future model forecasts (out by 6 day) - it is important to keep that in mind when making your queries.
  • Use appropriate parameters when querying the model so that you get accurate results related to your needs- take into consideration what it is you want out of this database before selecting all fields/parameters associated with that query result set i(e., significant wave heights versus mean directed).
4 .Make sure not use this information for safety critical applications since predictions should not be used as such purposes due legal considerations/restrictions set by Creative Commons Attribution 4 .0

Research Ideas

  • Analyzing global ocean conditions to determine mitigating strategies for climate change.
  • Utilizing the data to measure offshore activity, such as oil and gas exploration, in the East Atlantic region.
  • Using the dataset to better predict water levels in areas close to the East Atlantic coastline, aiding emergency response teams in preparing for high-wave situations or coastal flooding events
