Comprehensive Conifer Sampling in North America

Evaluating Geographic and Niche-Based Sampling Strategies

By [source]

About this dataset

Our comprehensive dataset enables us to evaluate optimal sampling strategies for conifer species in North America. This dataset contains two .csv files; the conifer_database_climoccs.csv and the itrdb_occs.csv which include geographical coordinates as well as bioclimatic data, such as minimum and maximum temperature, available energy (AET) and potential energy (PET), their associated ratios, and precipitation of warmest/coldest quarters. These provide detailed information to understand how accurately and completely different study designs capture a species' climatic niche both geographically or in a niche-based framework. So dive into our extensive collection of data today to see if your study design stands up!

How to use the dataset

This dataset can be used to compare different sampling strategies to accurately capture the climatic niche of conifers in North America. In order to make the most use of this data, we recommend following these steps:

  • Download and open both .csv files (conifer_database_climoccs.csv and itrdb_occs.csv).
  • Explore the contents of each file by looking for columns related to geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) along with bioclimatic information such as minimum and maximum temperatures, available energy (AET) / potential energy(PET), their ratio etc.
  • Create visualizations using the data by plotting species occurrences on a map or creating histograms that show distribution by geographic region/(s).
  • Compare different study designs using both geographic-based schemes as well as niche-based frameworks which measure how accurately & how completely various designs sample a species' climatic niche/s).
  • Generate more meaningful insights by exploring relationships between variables like maximum temperature with precipitation seasonality, potential evapotranspiration with available energy etc through correlation analysis or regression modeling techniques etc..

Using this guide should help you gain a better understanding of the data contained in these two .csv files, so you can extract useful information from them in order to draw meaningful conclusions about optimal sampling strategies for conifers in North America!

Research Ideas

  • Identifying the geographic range of each species, and mapping their distributions to inform conservation efforts.
  • Comparing different study designs in both geographic and niche-based frameworks, and measuring how accurately and how completely these designs sample a species' climatic niche
  • Analyzing patterns of climate change over time by comparing current climatic conditions against the historical records from ITRDB to identify areas of potential vulnerability or areas that may require further study for resilience planning
