About this dataset

This dataset contains information collected by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to monitor the health of selected counties with at least 500 respondents. This data can be used to help identify areas with emerging health problems, establish and track health objectives, and develop effective public health policies and programs. With comprehensive coverage of all states in the nation, this data is a great resource for quickly examining population-level risk factors across various categories such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, marital status and geographic location. BRFSS data includes a variety of metrics including public opinion surveys on health topics such as physical activity level, obesity rates and access to healthcare services. How to use the dataset

This guide provides an overview of the data available in this dataset and steps on how to use it appropriately.

The columns included in the dataset are: Locationabbr, Locationdesc, Class, Topic, Question Response Sample_Size Data_value Display_order Data_value_unit Data_value_type Data _Value_Footnote Symbol DataSource GeoLocation.

To access the data in this dataset:

1. Select your desired class or topic from the Class or Topic column respectively.  

2. Choose a location from Locationdesc column according to your preference (by state abbreviation if needed).  

3. Once you identified your desired records check out other related information such as response rate from the Sample Size column , value from data value column , display order from Display Order Column etc ..  

4. You can also filter additional information by checking for corresponding footnotes symbol in the Data Value Footnote symbol column .     5Finally retrieve all related records using datapoints identified using locationabbreviation located at GeoLocation Column 					       if you need more detailed localization information on a state level basis . 

With this dataset users can analyze emerging health concerns based on locality or state risk trends by cross referencing with responses reported by different sources such as surveys . This would lead to conclusions regarding behavior of individuals that may increase their risk due to certain lifestyle habits

Research Ideas

  • Using the response data in combination with location information, researchers and public health officials can monitor changing regional trends in risk factors for chronic diseases, both within and between counties.
  • Utilizing the Sample Size column of data, researchers and public health officials can track the size of population surveys conducted in different counties, to help ensure that adequate sample sizes are captured during SMART survey collection efforts.
