National Convention Deputies, France (1792-1795)

Context

In the years following 1789, the French Revolution saw a succession of different political regimes. The National Convention, which lasted from 1792 to 1795, was the first form of government in France based on an entirely republican constitution after the end of monarchy. The legislative period of the National Convention, covering the so-called "Reign of Terror" and the subsequent fall of Robespierre, was marked by extreme political violence, leading to the execution of several thousands of people, including many deputies of the National Convention. This dataset helps to explore the dynamics of political violence during that time.

Content

The dataset was scraped from the archival website of the French Parliament (Assemblée Nationale). It contains data of 904 deputies of the National Convention during the legislative period from September 1792 to October 1795. Apart from basic biographical data on name, origin, birth and death, the data includes information on the deputies' political affiliation, the Départments they represented, as well as the beginning and end of their mandate under the National Convention.

Inspiration

The dataset allows to search for relationships between political violence and factors such as political affiliation, geographic origin, and age (e.g. deputies having died during their mandate and their political affiliation).
