time series of foreign exchange rates per 1 Euro

Dataset Description

25+ Years of the Euro (€)

4 January 1999 – 4 June 2026

It wasn't until 1999 that the euro really began its journey, when 11 countries (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) fixed their exchange rates and created a new currency, with monetary policy passed to the European Central Bank. Today, the euro is over 25 years old.

Content

Reference rates are euro foreign exchange rates observed on major foreign exchange trading venues at a certain point in time. They represent the price of one currency in terms of another. The rates are usually updated around 16:00 CET on every working day, except on TARGET closing days.

The dataset contains the date and the euro exchange rate corresponding to the following currencies: Australian dollar, Bulgarian lev, Brazilian real, Canadian dollar, Swiss franc, Chinese yuan renminbi, Cypriot pound, Czech koruna, Danish krone, Estonian kroon, UK pound sterling, Greek drachma, Hong Kong dollar, Croatian kuna, Hungarian forint, Indonesian rupiah, Israeli shekel, Indian rupee, Iceland krona, Japanese yen, Korean won, Lithuanian litas, Latvian lats, Maltese lira, Mexican peso, Malaysian ringgit, Norwegian krone, New Zealand dollar, Philippine peso, Polish zloty, Romanian leu, Russian rouble, Swedish krona, Singapore dollar, Slovenian tolar, Slovak koruna, Thai baht, Turkish lira, US dollar, South African rand.

  • Some currencies in the list no longer exist, as they were replaced by the euro: Greek drachma (2002), Slovenian tolar (2007), Cypriot pound (2007), Maltese lira (2008), Slovak koruna (2009), Estonian kroon (2011), Latvian lats (2014), Lithuanian litas (2015), Croatian kuna (2023), Bulgarian lev (2026) .
  • The Bulgarian lev has been pegged to the euro since 2002 at 1 EUR = 1.9558 BGN. As of 2026, the lev has been replaced by the euro.
  • The Russian ruble no longer appears in the dataset, as the European Central Bank suspended the publication of its reference exchange rate starting from March 2022.
