About this Dataset

Indonesia National Science Olympiad (OSN)

This dataset contains the information of all Indonesia National Science Olympiad (OSN) participants in junior (SMP) and senior (SMA) high school grade from the year of 2009 until 2024. This data is gathered from various sources.

Data dictionary

  1. Nama Peserta (Participant's Name): The name of the participant. When possible, full name is used. Different people with the same name got differentiated by using number at the end of the name. For example: Kevin (1) and Kevin (2). Note that Indonesian name have no specific rule at the time.

  2. Gender: The gender of the participant. L symbolizes male (Laki-laki in Indonesian) and P symbolizes female (Perempuan in Indonesian). Initially, the information is absent from the 2010 - 2023 SMP contests and 2023 SMA contest. However, I manually added it by look up for the name online or determining it myself whether the name is feminine or masculine if no information is found online.

  3. Sekolah (School): The school that the participant attended during the contest. There might be some participant that switch school during the contest qualification. The school name used is what the announcement used. Whenever possible, the school of the SMP students that participate in SMA contest is the junior high school one instead of the senior one, even if the student already an SMA student at the national contest. Some schools that changed their name are denoted by their last name, the old name is written in paranthreses. Note that the common prefix of school in Indonesia: SMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama - Common Junior High School), SMA (Sekolah Menengah Atas - Common Senior High School), MA (Madrasah Aliyah - Senior High School under Religion Ministry), MTs (Madrasah Tsanawiyah - Junior High School under Religion Ministry), and Pesantren (Traditional Islamic Boarding School). Suffix N on the name indicates that the school is public (Negeri in Indonesian) while S indicates that the school is private (Swasta in Indonesian).

  4. Provinsi (Province): The province of the school of the participant. Note that Indonesia have 38 provinces plus one abroad (Luar Negeri) category which started from 2021. Some new provinces are created during the year of 2009 - 2024: Kalimantan Utara, (starting from 2015, splitted from Kalimantan Timur), Papua Selatan, Papua Tengah, Papua Pegunungan (starting from 2023, splitted from Papua), and Papua Barat Daya (starting from 2023, splitted from Papua Barat.

  5. Kab/Kota (Kabupaten or Regency/City): The city or regency of the school of the participant. Since there are splitting and merging of cities and regencies in all of Indonesia, the city/regency used is the current location whenever possible. Note that the some cities/regencies in new provinces may also show up in the former province, for example: Kota Tarakan (currently in Kalimantan Utara) may occurs in the Kalimantan Timur prior to 2015.

  6. Bidang (Subject): The subject of the contest. There are 9 subjects for the SMA level: Astronomi (astronomy), Biologi (biology), Ekonomi (economy), Fisika (physics), Geografi (geography), Informatika (Informatics), Kebumian (earth science), Kimia (chemistry), and Matematika (mathematics). Currently, there are 3 subjects for the SMP level: IPA (Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam - Natural Science), IPS (Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial - Social Science), and Matematika (Mathematics). However, note that during the 2010 - 2014 contests, IPA is splitted into two subjects: Fisika (physics) and Biologi (biology). Furthermore, Geografi subject only started at 2013.

  7. Jenjang Lomba (Contest level): Shows whether the level of the contest was Junior (SMP) or Senior (SMA).

  8. Jenjang Sekolah (School level): Shows whether the participant that participated in the contest is a Junior (SMP) or Senior (SMA) high school student. This differs from the previous column in that the SMP student may participate in SMA contest (and sometimes win).

  9. Kelas (Grade): Grade of the participant when participated in the contest. Note that SMP level student could be in 7, 8, or 9 grade and SMA level student could be in 10, 11, or 12 grade. However, on OSN, last grade of a level could not participate in the contest. So, only 7 and 8 grade students that could participate in SMP contest. SMA contest, however, could be attended by 8, 9, 10, or 11 grade students. There were some years when there are further rules regarding the 8 and 9 grade students participate in SMA contest, I do not remember which years. Majority of SMP contests has no grade information except for 2009 - 2011 and 2024. Only 2023 SMA contest that does not have grade information. However, I manually added some grade information by inferring from the participants that participate more than once or if I know the participant itself. Lastly, recent contests (after 2020) may show wrong information because the contest lay on two different academic years and there are inconsistencies in the grade used in the announcements.

  10. Medali (Medal): The medal that the participant got. It could be Partisipan (participant/no medal), Harapan (honorable mention), Perunggu (Bronze), Perak (Silver), and Emas (Gold). Harapan medals were given only at 2021 contest in all the subjects of SMP contest and Kimia subject of SMA contest at 2020 - 2022. The medalists of 2011 SMP contest were unknown. Normally, the number of gold, silver, and bronze medalists were 5, 10, and 5 respectively. However, there may be rarely an additional number when there is a tie in score. Furthermore, the 2020 and 2021 SMP contests gave (10, 10) golds, (15, 20) silvers, (20, 25) bronzes, and (0, 40) honorable mentions, respectively.
Update (2025): Semifinal round starts to exists in 2025 with the same number as a national round from previous years. So, I changed all of the previous non-medalists status to Finalis (finalist) and add Semifinalis (semifinalist) status to students that got eliminated at the semifinal round.

  11. Prize Tambahan (Additional Prize): Additional prize that the participant got. May be incomplete and uncleaned. Some of the common prizes are Best Theory, Best Experiment, or Best Analysis.

  12. Tahun (Year): Year of the contest. The OSN itself starts at 2002 but it is difficult to obtain data older than 2009.

Additional information:

  1. All the rules that I write next may be wrong for some contests, but they are true for at least a contest.
  2. Almost all of the time, the SMA gold medalist could not participate in the same subject at the next contests. However, it is possible to switch subject. Furthermore, medalists may absent from the next contest because he/she have been passed to national team or national training (Pelatnas). It is stricter at SMP contest in that all the medalist could not participate in the same subject at the next contests.
  3. Usually all the provinces have at least a participant in national stage. The participants are chosen by either passing grade (top unchosen national scorers) or province representative (best unchosen score in the province). Some contests chose passing grade first and other contests chose province representative first.
  4. Some contests limited the number of participants from a specific province, city/regency, or even school in a specific subject. However, the rules change slightly quite often and it is hard to keep track exactly.
