This descriptor classifies each tourism destination according to one of the following six tourism typologies: urban (or city tourism), coastal, nature, rural, snowy mountain, and mixed. The classification is first determined at NUTS3 level based on the proportions of tourism capacity (i.e., no. of rooms) across different geographical zones. The NUTS3 classification is then aggregated to NUTS2 level by selecting the category with the highest aggregate tourism demand (nights spent). This descriptor provides an indication of the most frequent tourism typology within each region. This descriptor is provided in the EU Tourism Dashboard as complementary information to characterize tourism offer and is available at regional level only (NUTS2 and NUTS3). UNIT OF MEASURE: Categories. RESOLUTION: NUTS2, NUTS3. COMPLETENESS: 100%. METHODOLOGY: The classification is first determined at NUTS3 (sub-regional) level based on the proportion of tourist accommodation establishments across the mentioned geographical categories. The NUTS3 classification is then upscaled to NUTS2 (regional) and NUTS0 (national) by selecting the category with the highest aggregate tourism demand (nights spent).
