CDC - Public Health Surveillance

Dataset Description

This dataset provides weekly hospital admission rates and corresponding admission levels for COVID-19, influenza (flu), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), aggregated to national and state/territory levels. Each row represents a single jurisdiction (national, state/territory) and reporting week (Sunday through Saturday).

Data are derived from CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Hospital Respiratory Data (HRD), which collect information reported by U.S. acute care and critical access hospitals on laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, influenza, and RSV hospital admissions, and monitors national and local trends in healthcare system stress and capacity.

Admission rates are calculated per 100,000 population, and admission levels are assigned based on CDC-defined thresholds for each virus.

New data are appended weekly on Fridays and represent the most recent complete reporting week at the time of publication. Previously published data are not revised or backfilled; all values reflect the data available at the time they were first reported.

Inclusion Criteria and Metric Calculations

Facility types and status: Acute care and critical access hospitals reporting to NHSN are included in the underlying data used to calculate these metrics. Psychiatric, rehabilitation, and religious non-medical hospital types are excluded. Hospitals are included based on active reporting status in NHSN during the applicable reporting week.

Admission counts and rates: Weekly admission counts represent the number of new hospital admissions with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, influenza, or RSV reported by participating hospitals for the reporting week (Sunday–Saturday). Admission rates are calculated by dividing aggregated admissions by the corresponding jurisdictional population and expressed per 100,000 persons.

Admission levels: Admission levels are categorical indicators (e.g., low, moderate, high, very high) assigned based on CDC-defined thresholds applied to the weekly admission rates for each virus. The thresholds for each pathogen and state can be found online here: https://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/psc/hospital-respiratory-reporting/data-methods.html

Reporting considerations: Metrics are based on data submitted by reporting hospitals for a given week and may not represent all hospitals within a jurisdiction. Because previously published data are not revised or backfilled, values reflect the data available at the time of initial reporting.
