Dataset Description

CEWS was a wage subsidy program for employers in Canada who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic between March 15, 2020, and October 23, 2021.
The CEWS registry lists employers who have received the CEWS. This registry is no longer being updated as the final claim period for the benefit ended on October 23, 2021, and the period to submit applications for CEWS ended April 21, 2022.

Included in the dataset
This dataset includes the legal name and operating/trade name of a corporation or a registered charity that has received the CEWS.

Not included in the dataset
To protect the privacy of individuals, only corporations and registered charities are disclosed. Partnerships, sole proprietors, or trusts that are not registered charities are not disclosed. This dataset does not include the amount received by an employer, nor the periods for which it received the subsidy.

Changes to the CEWS registry over time
The CEWS registry changed over time as applications were received, cancelled or withdrawn, as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) determined that some recipients were ineligible, recipients voluntarily repaid their claim, and as feedback on the tool was received.

Legal authority for the CEWS registry
The legal authority to use information for the purposes of the CEWS registry is found in Subsection 241(3.5) of the Income Tax Act which was enacted in Bill C-14, COVID-19 Emergency Response Act, No. 2.
