About this Dataset

Infectious Diseases, County, Year, And Sex

Infectious Diseases by Disease, County, Year, and Sex
This dataset contains case counts and rates for selected communicable diseases—listed in the data dictionary—that met the surveillance case definition for that disease and was reported for California residents, by disease, county, year, and sex. The data represent cases with an estimated illness onset date from 2001 through the last year indicated from California Confidential Morbidity Reports and/or Laboratory Reports. Data captured represent reportable case counts as of the date indicated in the “Temporal Coverage” section below, so the data presented may differ from previous publications due to delays inherent to case reporting, laboratory reporting, and epidemiologic investigation.

Condition Specific Notes:
'E. coli Other STEC (non-O157)' required reporting began 2006
'Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and other Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies' and 'Shiga Toxin Positive Feces (without culture confirmation)' required reporting began 2007
'E. coli O157' and 'E. coli Other STEC (non-O157)' reported here up thru 2010
'Salmonellosis' includes 'Paratyphoid Fever' reported here up thru 2010
'Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)' and 'Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)' reported here starting in 2011
'Salmonellosis' and 'Paratyphoid Fever' were reported as separate conditions here starting in 2011
'Anaplasmosis' and 'Ehrlichiosis' were reported here as separate conditions starting in 2011
'Shiga Toxin Positive Feces (without culture confirmation)' reported here up thru 2011
'Chikungunya', 'Flavivirus Infection of Undetermined Species', and 'Zika Virus Infection' required reporting began June 1, 2016 and so rates and corresponding confidence intervals were not been calculated for 2016
'Shigellosis' includes subtypes A thru D and Unspecified
'Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) without evidence of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)' reported here starting in 2011
'Cyclosporiasis' and 'Hepatitis E, acute infection' required reporting began in 2011 'Amebiasis' and 'Streptococcal Infection (cases in food and dairy workers)' required reporting ended September 30, 2019 so rates and corresponding confidence intervals were not calculated for 2019"

County
"The county in which the case resided when they were diagnosed and State-wide total.

Values include:
California, Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Lake, Lassen, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Plumas, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, Yolo, Yuba."

Year
"Estimated onset date is the date closest to the time when symptoms first appeared from 2001 - 2019. Since a date of onset may not be recorded, the estimated onset date can range from the date of first appearance of symptoms to the date the report was made to California Department of Public Health.
Value:
2001 - 2019"

Sex
"The patient's sex as reported by the provider. Female includes persons reported as ""Female"" and male includes persons reported as ""Male"". Total includes the sum of ""Male"", ""Female"" and ""Other"". ""Other"" captures persons who reported a gender other than ""Male"" or ""Female"", which includes instances where gender is missing.

Values:
Male, Female, Total"

Cases
"The number of cases reported per disease meeting the surveillance case definition by County, Year, and Sex. National surveillance disease case definitions are found at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/nndss/case-definitions.html. If blank, the value has been suppressed due to small numbers based on Publication Scoring Criteria published in https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/dataandstats/Documents/DHCS-DDG-V2.0-120116.pdf

Condition Specific Notes:
Coccidioidomycosis case counts include only ""Confirmed"" cases and therefore may be lower than counts of combined provisional Suspect, Probable, and Confirmed cases published in the ""Coccidioidomycosis in California Provisional Monthly Report.""

Value:
Positive numeric

Population
"The estimated population size (rounded to the nearest integer) for each County, Year, Sex strata. California Department of Finance (DOF) Population Projection data (P-3 data table) was used to determine the population values for years 2010 - 2019 and estimate totals (E-2 data table) was used to determine the population values for years 2001 - 2009 for a particular demographic subgroup relative to the total State/County population for a given year. These data are available at http://www.dof.ca.gov/Forecasting/Demographics.

Value:
Positive numeric "

Rate
"Incidence rate is the number of cases per 100,000 population per County, Year, and Sex using the calculation ((Cases *100,000)/Population).

Incident Rate value '-'
indicates one of the following three conditions:

  1. Zero case counts reported per disease by County, Year, and Sex
  2. 2016 cases of 'Chikungunya', 'Flavivirus Infection of Undetermined Species', and 'Zika Virus Infection' as required reporting began June 1, 2016 3. 2019 cases of 'Amebiasis' and 'Streptococcal Infection (cases in food and dairy workers)' as required reporting ended September 30, 2019

Incident Rate value 'SC'
indicates that the corresponding row disease case counts have been suppressed due to small numbers based on Publication Scoring Criteria published in
https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/dataandstats/Documents/DHCS-DDG-V2.0-120116.pdf

Incident Rate value 'xxx.xxx*'
indicates an unstable relative standard error wherein the relative standard error was 23 percent or more of the incidence rate estimate--a threshold recommended by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Value:
Positive numeric decimal (xxx.xxx)
